Free School Meal (FSM) / Pupil Premium Entitlement

Dear Parent/Carer,

As you are new to Winterbourne Junior Girls’ School, it is important to explain what your daughter will receive from the School if they are entitled to Free School Meals (FSM) / ‘Pupil Premium’. We believe in equality of opportunity and strive to help every student reach her maximum potential. Therefore, we have put a package together so that your daughter does not miss any opportunity afforded to all.

If your family qualifies for the Pupil Premium Grant, your daughter will be entitled to a free school blazer; free school trips; a free afterschool activity club (based on first come first served bookings) every term; free musical instrument tuition in year 5 and 6; a free place at Breakfast Club and as soon as her funding comes through to the school – a free Chromebook Laptop Computer which is hers to keep on leaving the school.

We encourage all of our parents to check their eligibility for Free School Meals. If you are not sure whether you are eligible for FSM, there is no harm in checking by completing the checker below:

https://fsm.lgfl.net/

If you do not have access to the internet please let the school know and we will be able to help you. Alternatively, please complete a Free School Meals form in the School office.

The protection that is currently in place for all children will finish at the end of the current academic year. This means that all children that are currently entitled to free school meals must be rechecked to ensure they are still eligible before the autumn 2026 census date.

For schools that buy our service, we will carry out these rechecks automatically and notify you of the outcomes, including the recheck date for children who remain eligible. Schools that do not buy our service will need to complete these checks themselves. From 1 September 2026, there will be two categories of free school meal eligibility: Targeted: Children in households receiving Universal Credit with annual earnings of £7,400 or less. These pupils will attract pupil premium and other disadvantaged funding. Other entitlements, such as the holiday activities and food programme (HAF) and the ‘extended rights’ element of school travel assistance, will also be based on this category.

Expanded: Children in households receiving Universal Credit with annual earnings above £7,400. These pupils will be entitled to free school meals only and will not attract pupil premium. Some pupils will need to be recorded as FSM6. This applies to pupils who are, or have been, eligible for free school meals at any point in the last six years. Only pupils eligible under the Targeted category will count towards the FSM6 cohort, which is used for pupil premium and deprivation funding in the national funding formula (NFF).

We encourage all families who are not currently entitled to free school meals to apply after 1 September 2026, as they may qualify under the expanded criteria.

Allergy Aware:

Dear Parent/Carer,

As you may be aware we have a nut-free policy. For the safety of our pupils that have nut allergies, all nut-based products are banned from the school premises. This includes the kitchen lunch menu. All food products prepared at the School are nut-free.

Please ensure that you do not send your child into school with any nut-based products for a snack or in their packed lunch on School trips (this also includes products that may contain traces of nuts). It is important to check the labelling of food products before sending your child in to school with them. Any food brought in for your daughter’s birthday should be labelled clearly with the ingredients.

We also ask that if your child has consumed any nut-based products before school, they wash their hands thoroughly. We want to ensure the health and safety of all our pupils, as some nut allergies are so severe that contact with nuts can cause an allergic reaction.

Parents and carers must notify the school if their child has any known or suspected allergy to nuts and provide all the medical information and any medication. This will be on your child’s care plan so that the school can keep your child safe at all times. We will also share this information with the kitchen staff.

Thank you for your cooperation with this matter.

Healthy Packed lunches:

We encourage all parents and carers to choose the school dinner option for their daughter. School dinners are nutritious, healthy and tasty. The children can choose from the menu and there are always jacket potatoes with various fillings, salad, bread and fruit available daily. Please note that all meat served is Halal.

If you do wish to provide your daughter with a packed lunch from home, below is a guide of what to put in a healthy packed lunch. Please note we ask you not to send a drink in with a packed lunch – as water is readily available for all diners and is the only drink we allow the girls to have during the day. Packed lunches are checked daily. If your daughter does not have a healthy balanced packed lunch we will contact you and advise you of this. We will also source a school lunch for your child from the School menu.
